Hallo Leute, wie geht’s?
Quick confession: I did occasionally watch Germany’s Next Topmodel growing up. Not every episode, but enough that Heidi Klum always felt kind of present. You’d see clips somewhere, hear people talk about it, and it somehow became part of the cultural background.
That’s why I found it interesting to turn this into a dialogue. Not really about fashion, but about trying to understand why certain people become so famous.

Rebecca: Sag mal, Luisa, hast du eigentlich gesehen, wie erfolgreich Heidi Klum weltweit geworden ist? Ich mein, die ist ja nicht nur in Deutschland bekannt, sondern auch in den USA total präsent.
Luisa: Ja, schon. Aber irgendwie versteh ich den Hype nicht so ganz ⍟. Also klar, sie ist erfolgreich, aber was genau macht sie denn jetzt so besonders?
Rebecca: Na ja, sie hat es halt geschafft, sich international zu etablieren. Das ist für Deutsche in der Unterhaltungsbranche gar nicht so selbstverständlich. Viele kennen sie ja aus amerikanischen Shows oder als Jurorin bei großen Formaten.
Luisa: Hm, vielleicht. Aber wenn ich sie sehe, denk ich mir oft ⍟: Das ist halt ein Model, das irgendwann im Fernsehen gelandet ist. Mehr irgendwie auch nicht.
Rebecca: Ach komm, ganz so einfach ist das nun auch wieder nicht ⍟. Sie hat ja über Jahre ihre eigene Marke aufgebaut. Und Shows wie Germany’s Next Topmodel laufen ja inzwischen seit Ewigkeiten.
Luisa: Ja gut, das stimmt schon. Aber diese Sendung ist mir ehrlich gesagt ein bisschen zu viel Drama ⍟. Ich hab da mal reingeschaut und dachte nur: Muss das alles so laut sein?
Rebecca: Das gehört wahrscheinlich zum Konzept. Reality-TV eben. Aber man muss ihr lassen: Sie weiß ziemlich genau, wie man im Gespräch bleibt ⍟.
Luisa: Ja, das kann sie wohl. Trotzdem denke ich mir manchmal: Der Erfolg ist größer als das Talent.
Rebecca: Vielleicht. Oder sie hat einfach ein gutes Gespür dafür, wie das Geschäft funktioniert.
Luisa: Möglich. Ich will ihr den Erfolg ja auch gar nicht absprechen. Ich versteh ihn nur… irgendwie nicht ganz.
Rebecca: Tja, Erfolg muss man manchmal nicht komplett verstehen. Hauptsache, er funktioniert.

Translation
Rebecca: Hey Luisa, did you see how successful Heidi Klum has become worldwide? I mean, she’s not only famous in Germany but also very present in the United States.
Luisa: Yeah, sure. But somehow I don’t really get the hype. I mean, she’s successful, but what exactly makes her so special now?
Rebecca: Well, she managed to establish herself internationally. That’s actually not so common for Germans in the entertainment industry. Many people know her from American shows or as a judge on big formats.
Luisa: Maybe. But when I see her, I often think to myself that she’s basically just a model who eventually ended up on television. Not much more than that.
Rebecca: Come on, it’s not that simple. She’s built her own brand over the years. And shows like Germany’s Next Topmodel have been running for ages now.
Luisa: True, that’s fair. But honestly that show is a bit too much drama for me. I watched it once and thought: does everything really have to be this loud?
Rebecca: That’s probably part of the concept. Reality TV. But you have to admit she knows exactly how to stay relevant.
Luisa: Yeah, she probably does. Still, sometimes I feel like the success is bigger than the talent.
Rebecca: Maybe. Or maybe she simply has a good instinct for how the business works.
Luisa: Possibly. I’m not denying her success. I just don’t completely understand it.
Rebecca: Well, sometimes you don’t have to fully understand success. As long as it works.
