This newsletter is inspired by those everyday bakery moments: standing in line, panicking about which Brötchen to choose, and suddenly forgetting all your German under pressure.

Bäcker: Guten Morgen! Was darf’s sein?
Lena: Oh wow … erst mal kurz schauen ⍟. Ich war ein Jahr in Australien, und ich sag’s Ihnen: Das hier hab ich echt vermisst.
Bäcker: Das hör ich öfter. Willkommen zurück im Land von Brot und Brötchen.
Lena: Ganz ehrlich ⍟, dort gibt’s zwar Toast in tausend Varianten, aber ein richtiges Brötchen? Fehlanzeige. Und Laugengebäck kennt da fast niemand.
Bäcker: Ja, damit können wir hier ein bisschen angeben. Also, was springt Ihnen denn ins Auge ⍟?
Lena: Schwer zu sagen. Ich nehm auf jeden Fall zwei Brötchen, eins mit Körnern, eins ganz klassisch. Und… oh, haben Sie Laugenstangen?
Bäcker: Natürlich. Frisch aus dem Ofen.
Lena: Nehm ich. Zwei. Man weiß ja nie ⍟.
Bäcker: Klingt nach Nachholbedarf.
Lena: Absolut. Ich hab mir fest vorgenommen, heute nichts Gesundes zu bestellen. Das hab ich mir verdient.
Bäcker: Verständlich. Soll’s noch was Süßes sein?
Lena: Ja… ein Franzbrötchen, bitte. Die hab ich wirklich schmerzlich vermisst.
Bäcker: Gute Wahl. Manche kommen nur dafür rein.
Lena: Kann ich nachvollziehen. Und sagen Sie, das Brot da, ist das Roggen?
Bäcker: Genau. Schön kräftig. Hält sich auch ein paar Tage.
Lena: Perfekt. In Australien war Brot nach einem Tag gefühlt schon beleidigt.
Bäcker: Dann pack ich Ihnen ein Stück ein. Sonst noch was?
Lena: Nein, das reicht. Sonst eskaliert das hier komplett ⍟.
Bäcker: Macht 6,80.
Lena: Gerne. Und danke, das fühlt sich gerade sehr deutsch an.
Bäcker: Immer wieder gern. Willkommen zurück.

⍟ erst mal kurz schauen means “to have a quick look first,” used to buy time before deciding, and it is spoken and informal.
⍟ ganz ehrlich means “to be honest,” used to introduce a frank personal opinion, and it is spoken and informal.
⍟ was springt Ihnen denn ins Auge means “what catches your eye,” used to invite someone to choose or comment on options, and it is spoken and neutral.
⍟ man weiß ja nie means “you never know,” used to justify taking a precaution or extra option, and it is spoken and informal.
⍟ sonst eskaliert das hier komplett means “otherwise this will get out of hand,” used humorously to set a limit, and it is spoken and informal.
Translation
Baker: Good morning! What can I get you?
Lena: Oh wow… let me have a quick look first. I spent a year in Australia, and I can tell you, I really missed this.
Baker: I hear that a lot. Welcome back to the land of bread and bread rolls.
Lena: To be honest, they have toast in a thousand versions there, but a proper bread roll? No chance. And hardly anyone knows pretzel bread.
Baker: Yeah, that’s something we can show off a bit. So, what catches your eye?
Lena: Hard to say. I’ll definitely take two rolls, one with seeds, one classic. And oh, do you have pretzel sticks?
Baker: Of course. Fresh out of the oven.
Lena: I’ll take them. Two. You never know.
Baker: Sounds like you’re making up for lost time.
Lena: Absolutely. I decided I’m not ordering anything healthy today. I’ve earned that.
Baker: Fair enough. Anything sweet as well?
Lena: Yes… a Franzbrötchen, please. I really missed those.
Baker: Good choice. Some people come in just for that.
Lena: I get that. And tell me, that bread there, is it rye?
Baker: Exactly. Nice and hearty. Keeps for a few days too.
Lena: Perfect. In Australia, bread felt offended after one day.
Baker: Then I’ll pack you a piece. Anything else?
Lena: No, that’s enough. Otherwise this will completely get out of hand.
Baker: That’ll be 6.80.
Lena: Sure. And thanks, this feels very German right now.
Baker: Always happy to help. Welcome back.
