This might just be peak German culinary creativity: Toast Hawaii. Toast, ham, pineapple, melted cheese… and sometimes even a cherry on top. If you’ve never heard of it, yes, this was a real and surprisingly popular dish.
And as we say in German: „Da scheiden sich die Geister.“
Literally: the spirits separate. In other words, people strongly disagree.

Frauke: Klar bist du das. Du bist wahrscheinlich auch der einzige Mensch unter vierzig, der sich freiwillig eine Kirsche auf Käse legt.
Jonas: Na hör mal!

Frauke: Mach ruhig. Aber iss ihn bitte selbst. Ich schau nur zu.

Frauke: I have, unfortunately. At a party. At first I thought it was a joke.
Jonas: Unbelievable. It’s iconic.
Frauke: Sure, iconic. But more like flared trousers or orange wallpaper.
Jonas: I love it. If someone makes Toast Hawaii, I’m immediately in.
Frauke: Of course you are. You’re probably the only person under forty who voluntarily puts a cherry on cheese.
Jonas: Hey now!
Frauke: I’m just saying. It’s brave.
Jonas: You know what? Next time I’ll make one for you.
Frauke: Go ahead. But please eat it yourself. I’ll just watch.
