In Germany, around two thirds of people take at least one private trip per year, which makes Reisen one of the most common small-talk topics there is. This dialogue picks up on those different travel mindsets you hear again and again.

Marie: Du, Julia, wenn du dir jetzt sofort eine Reise aussuchen könntest – ohne nach Geld oder Urlaubstagen zu schauen ⍟ – wo würdest du hin? Ich hab neulich gemerkt, dass mich dieser Gedanke gerade mehr motiviert als jede To-do-Liste.
Julia: Hmm… Irgendwo, wo es warm ist, das Meer direkt vor der Tür liegt und absolut nichts los ist. Am liebsten eine kleine Insel, wenig Menschen, gutes Essen und sonst nur lesen, schwimmen und schlafen. Kein Programm, kein Sightseeing, einfach abschalten ⍟.
Marie: Siehst du, genau da fängt es bei mir schon an. Ich würd durchdrehen ⍟, wenn ich nichts zu entdecken hätte. Mein Traum wäre eher eine große Stadt, am besten irgendwo in Asien oder Südamerika. Neue Gerüche, fremde Sprachen, Chaos auf den Straßen – das gibt mir irgendwie Energie.
Julia: Das klingt für mich eher nach Stress als nach Urlaub. Ich hab im Alltag schon genug Lärm und Termine, da brauch ich im Urlaub keinen Wecker und keinen Plan. Wenn der größte Programmpunkt des Tages die Frage ist, was ich abends esse, bin ich glücklich.
Marie: Verrückt, oder? Ich plane im Urlaub sogar freiwillig früh aufzustehen, nur um möglichst viel zu sehen. Museen, Märkte, einfach rumlaufen und mich treiben lassen ⍟. Am Strand liegen ist für mich maximal ein Nachmittag.
Julia: Und für mich ist genau das der Inbegriff von Erholung ⍟. Wahrscheinlich würden wir zusammen keine zwei Tage Urlaub überleben.
Marie: Stimmt. Aber genau deshalb haben wir ja immer was zu erzählen, wenn wir zurückkommen.

Translation

Julia: Hmm… Somewhere warm, with the sea right outside the door and absolutely nothing going on. Ideally a small island, few people, good food, and otherwise just reading, swimming, and sleeping. No schedule, no sightseeing, just switching off.
Marie: See, that’s exactly where it already starts for me. I’d go crazy if there was nothing to discover. My dream would be a big city, preferably somewhere in Asia or South America. New smells, foreign languages, chaos in the streets, that somehow gives me energy.
Julia: That sounds more like stress than vacation to me. I already have enough noise and appointments in everyday life, so on vacation I don’t need an alarm clock or a plan. If the biggest item on the agenda is deciding what I’ll eat in the evening, I’m happy.
Marie: Crazy, right? On vacation I even plan to get up early voluntarily just to see as much as possible. Museums, markets, just walking around and going with the flow. Lying on the beach is at most an afternoon for me.
Julia: And for me, that is exactly the definition of relaxation. We probably wouldn’t survive two days of vacation together.
Marie: True. But that’s exactly why we always have something to talk about when we get back.
